Conclusion: Why Poipu Beach Park Koloa HI Should Be on Your Hawaii Bucket List
This beach was such a discovery for us! We began at the beach in front of the Sheraton and it was a little too rough for us to be honest! We were at the Koloa Landing Resort (see my in depth review on that amazing Marriott Autograph Collection property) so we had the option of umbrella rentals, etc. but we were searching for beginner level seas, some snorkeling, swimming, the like. Our hotel suggested Poipu Beach and it was only a short, 4 minute drive by vehicle and there is a path to walk to it if you prefer.
First of all, it is highly advised that you arrive at the place early so that you can have a good parking spot! Also, if you anticipate requiring some shade from the sun, be sure to bring your own shade unless you intend to use the canopy that has picnic tables underneath it. This place is very pretty; however, do note that it is a bit further away from the actual beach. We had decided to rent an umbrella for the day out, and though there were some windy moments, our umbrella actually did us very well indeed!
On the beach, there is an actively manned lifeguard tower, and the lifeguards stationed there are working day and night and diligently to make sure that all beachgoers are safe. As much as there is indeed a special and guarded section where people can swim without any restriction, there is also a special section nearby where the tides meet in a rather turbulent fashion. Due to safety concerns, the lifeguards were always keeping a close eye on this place and were constantly shouting and instructing beachgoers on the megaphone to get back to the safe swimming place. There is this adorable little island straight across the way and there were lots of fish to look at! We even got to see them right up my at the shore! And if you’re lucky, you will see a turtle or two along the shore because it is mating season now and we saw 3 huge turtles out there! There is even a spot close to the covered picnic tables to spray yourself off, I just did not notice any bathrooms.
